This paper presents the shift in nature protection legislation from nature reserves to ecological networks in the European Union and French contexts. This shift widens the scope of nature protection from species or habitat protection to include ecosystem services. The development of landscape ecology, has played an important role in this change of standpoint. It Nso explores how species move across landscapes and how to implement those networks on land with multiple uses. Planning must be at different scales to implement networks that are coherent locally but also across regions and states, at the EU level. Locally and regionally, there must be a continuum between ecological networks in urban, rural and ＂natural＂ landscapes.
