作为新文化运动与"五四"运动的发起人之一,陈独秀在其中起了先锋和中坚的作用,尤其是他对"民主"与"科学"这两大思想的极力张扬,尽管受当时时代的局限,陈独秀在"民主"与"科学"的阐述中尚存在缺陷,但不可否认的是这两大思想对于启发民智、掀起思想解放潮流、促进中华民族的觉醒和国民素质的提高发挥了巨大的作用。
