The theme of initiation has always been one of focuses of the western literature.The first novel of The Faerie Queene mainly talks about a series of adventures experienced by Redcrosse Knight.Through these adventures,we can see the growth of Redcrosse Knight in the aspects of spirit and soul,and this process also appears as a ＂fall-and-rise＂ pattern.Based on the topic of the initiation novel,the present paper ventures to prove that Edmund Spenser’s Faerie Queene could be regarded as a pioneer of the English initiation novels through the analysis of Redcrosse Knight’s adventures.
