Discussion on Purgation Contraindication in Treatise on Cold Damage

《伤寒论》下法主要用于治疗阳明腑实证,多为驱邪而设,力专药猛。该法在攻邪的同时易使病邪传里并损伤正气,故病在表不可下,阳明病腑实未成者不可下,脾胃虚寒者不可下,阴血亏虚者不可下,阳气虚衰者不可下,下后慎用攻下。

Purgation in Treatise on Cold Damage, having the potent action of dispelling pathogenic qi, is mainly used for treating excess syndrome of Yangming. Due to its violence of dispelling pathogenic qi, it easily makes pathogenic factors transmit from the exterior into the interior and invade healthy qi, thus unavailable for the patient with exterior syndrome, without excess syndrome of Yangming, or with deficiency and cold of spleen and stomach, blood syndrome and qi deficiency syndrome. It should cautiously use purgation after purgation.
