Robert Hart and Modern Chinese Postal Service

中国近代,列强多次发动侵华战争,迫使清政府签订了一系列不平等条约,规定上海等几十个地区为通商口岸。列强在这些地区侵犯中国主权,开设邮局,经营邮递业务。赫德为挽回中国主权,与列强进行了长期的有理、有利、有节的抗争,使中国近代邮政从无到有,从小到大,作出一重要贡献,功不可没。

In modern times, imperialist powers launched many wars of aggression and forced the Qing Government to sign a series of treaties of inequality, listing Shanghai and other cities as trading ports. In those areas, those countries encroached upon Chinese sovereignty, set up post offices and provided postal service. Robert Hart, in order to save Chinese sovereignty, struggled with those powers on just grounds, to China＇ s benefit and with restraint, and made important contributions to modern Chinese postal industry.
