英语中有大量短小精悍、形象生动、表现力强的习语。"A and B"式是其中比较独特的一种形式。该类习语字数精炼,结构固定,搭配讲究,富有节奏,朗朗上口,具有很强的表意功能和修辞效果。由于习语是一种特殊的语言组合,汉译时除了意义传达准确无误外,语言形式上也颇有讲究。"四化"策略—异化、归化、中立化和四字化,对这类习语的翻译具有较强的可操作性。

English is rich in idioms which are terse, vivid and expressive. ＂A and B＂ construction is a unique form of idioms in that they are lexically short, structurally fixed, eollocationally graceful, phonetically rhythmic and make smooth and easy reading, and as a result, such idioms are rhetorically effective. As idioms are special language combinations, importance should be attached to pre- serving their forms apart from keeping their original meanings. The four strategies, namely, foreignization, domestication, neutralization and four-character expressions, prove practical in E-C translation of such idioms.
