ABSTRACT: China is experiencing an extremely rapid urbanization at present. In this process, as a residential space for migrant population with distinctive Chinese characteristics, urban village has attracted wide attentions. Applying the method of case study, the paper investigates the living condition of its residents in Shanghai. The results show that Shanghai's urban villages are mainly located outside the inner ring road. Compared with urban residents, the residents in urban villages are living in a much worse environment, with small living space, insufficient facilities, and dilapidated housing. Meanwhile, these villages have become a temporary residence both for local farmers and migrant workers. With the promotion of large-scale renovation, Shanghai's urban villages are gradually disappearing. After these villages are removed, the issue of how to provide affordable housing for migrant population should be considered seriously.
