On Metadiscoursal Features of Oral English"Machine-cut" Chunks

摘要本文探讨英语口语"机切"语块的元话语特征以期能为我国大学英语口语教学提供启示。首先从语用化和口语产出的理论视角阐述高频口语语块具有元话语倾向的理据;然后基于两个英语本族语者口语语料库探究高频"机切"四词语块的形式、意义和功能特征。研究发现,这类语块具有明显的词汇语法型式和元话语功能倾向;而且该倾向的强度与语块的频数切点成正比关系,故称元话语语块。它们虽然从传统的句法和语义上看似不完整,却可视为具有元话语语用意义的短语单位。 This study explores metadiscoursal features of oral English ＂machine-cut＂ chunks （OCs） in the hope of providing implications for oral English teaching in Chinese universities. It first elucidates theoretical justifications of a metadiscoursal tend- ency of high frequency OCs based on theories of pragmaticaliza- tion and oral production. It then investigates form, meaning and functional features of high-frequency four-word OCs in two spo- ken corpora by native English speakers. It is found that these OCs tend to share salient lexical-grammatical patterns with metadiscoursal functions,and that such a tendency is positively associated with OC frequency cut-offs; hence the name metadis- coursal OC （MOC）. Though these MOCs do not seem to be complete in syntactic structure or semantic meaning in conven- tional grammars, they can be regarded as phraseological units with pragmatic meanings of metadiscourse.
