As a comparatively implicit strategy of discourse rep- resentation, the metaphorical representation could manipulate the community's understanding of the represented source domains and thus becomes an effective channel in media discourse to re- flect and strengthen the existing societal structure. A compara- tive analysis of the metaphorical representation of Olympic e- conomy between English and Chinese media discourse demon- strates that they share the four most frequent metaphorical pat- terns, which reveals their common developmental and competi- tive mentality of Olympic economy and indicates the influence of associated western values on China in its economic transfor- marion. However, diverse scenarios constructed in a common metaphorical pattern and particular English and Chinese meta- phorical patterns reflect their different economic ideologies and disparate perspectives of Olympic economy. This enables us to unearth their differences in the metaphorical representation of O- lympic economy that are concealed by their shared macro pat- terns. Such analysis may strengthen the cognitive explanation in critical discourse analysis and simultaneously broadens the per- spective to carry out comparative studies on metaphor.
