On the Interpreter's Role in Liaison Interpreting

联络口译译员应该正确定位自身在口译活动中的角色,努力做到既能够把握适度的"中立",不"过分参与",又能够适时地通过"客户教育"和"讲者教育",发挥自己在口译进程中的能动性,真正成为口译活动中语言和文化交流的促进者。

Based on the characteristics of liaison interpreting and the research achievements on interpreters＇ role,this paper discusses how an interpreter should determine his role in liaison interpreting.The analysis is based on the two dimensions to the interpreter＇s role,i.e.the ＂nomothetic dimension＂,the expectations and attitudes which a social system has of the interpreter,and the ＂ideographic dimension＂,the interpreter＇s own attitudes towards that role.The conclusion is that a liaison interpreter should correctly identify his role in interpreting,trying to ＂stay neutral＂ and to avoid ＂over-participation＂,taking initiatives to appropriately ＂educate the client＂ and ＂educate the speaker＂,in order to become the real language and culture facilitator in interpreting.
