Ulysses is called ＂Double Dutch＂ by many critics. In this book, James Joyce uses modern style and complicated language to illustrate sufficient contents. In this thesis, the author will analyze ＂mother＂ as a whole, in order to find out what James Joycet under- standing of ＂mother＂ really is and then chase down what his country Ireland means to him.
