The paper analyzes the subtext in the short story 'The Third and Final Continent' in Jhumpa Lahiri's award-winning short story collection.The short story is narrated through a male perspective,and has long been considered an uneventful story full of inspirations for immigrants.The paper purports to probe into the hidden female subtexts underlying the male narrative through three women figures,namely,Mrs Croft,the mother and Mala.The subtext in the short story unveils Orientalism of the text and the dramatic irony embedded in Lahiri's ethical stance.
