Objective To provide some considerations for the surveillance and quality control of chromium for future based on the summary of the status of hexavalent chromium risk assessment and analysis. Methods The status of general form, source of exposure, toxic effect and risk assessment were summarized, as well as the situation of hexavalent chromium studies in recent years. Results More accurate results can be obtained through detecting different oxidation states to monitor chromium level in combination with related toxicological research data. Conclusion The test results of total chromium or chromium of different valence cannot reflect whether human are in a potentially high-risk state. Therefore, a comprehensive analysis needs to be conducted of the assessment of hazard of chromium which is a necessary element to human.
