Reflections on Hu Shi's Theory of Bold Hypothesis and Careful Demonstration

胡适提出的"大胆的假设,小心的求证"十字真言,早已为人们所熟知,有关研究很多,历来褒贬不一。这一治学方法具有一定的合理性,有其思想上的意义和学术上的价值。然而,由于这一方法也存在矛盾性和局限性的一面,对其作用与影响也不应过于夸大。胡适将其方法口号化,使其易于流行,但也容易引起误解,造成流弊。

The theory of Bold Hypothesis and Careful Demonstration proposed by Hu Shi has been well known and commented favorably and unfavorably by different people. This scholarly research method con- tains certain rationality, significance of thought and the academic value. However, its function and influ- ence should not be exaggerated because of its contradiction and limitations. Hu Shi made it popular by slo- ganeering but this may easily caused misunderstandin~ and abuses.
