IN ancient times, Zhangye, a city in west China's Gan- su Province, was known as "Golden Zhangye" due to its strategic military importance and geographical location. As one of the four counties in the Hexi Cor- ridor (the important route t^om north China to the Central Asia for traders and the military) thousands of years ago, it stood as the economic and cultural center of every past dynasty in northwest China and a hub of political and diplomatic activities.
