现代远程教育并不完全排斥传统教育，二者并非水火不相容。现代远程教育的本质是开放性，它为以学生为中心创造了条件。信息技术正在强烈地冲击着传统教育模式的各个方面，改变着教育的方式。现代远程教育与传统教育相比较，二者各有利弊。在发展过程中，现代远程教育与传统教育之间存在着一定的互补性与趋同性，认识这一点，将有利于我国现代远程教育的健康发展。
