Ian McEwan applies postmodern meta-fictional technique to his novel Atonement and reveals the contradictive relationship be-tween fiction and reality. With the reference to classical works, the writer highlights the self-consciousness of the novel; through the self-reve-lation of the writing process, he blurs the line between fiction and reality. The application of metafiction renders the novel more aesthetic signif-icance and meaning.
