Na'er is the first representative work of China's 21st-century "diceng wenxue" or subaltern literature. The novel uses starts with a discussion of Na'er by first foregrounding the ways in which the story portrays the protagonist Zhu Weiguo and nar- rates his tragic tale via its seemingly cynical first-person narrator. It explores the extent to which, via the disjuncture between the narrator's ironic tone and Zhu Weiguo's failed resistance, points out the historical sense of Chinese subaltern literature in the 21 s~ century. The transformation of "dicing" raises questions about conflating and confounding China's revolutionary discourse and socialist culture with the West-originated postcolonial theory. The confounding obscures the social, cultural and political condi- tions and practices of different societies, bringing about the marginalization of basic and important revolutionary discourse and conception.
