Objective To compare the effect of two ways of oral therapy for mild hypokalemia. Methods We retrospectively analyzed the clinical data of 116 cases treated by oral therapeutics for mild hypokalemia between March 2010 and March 2011. 58 cases were treated by potassium chloride sustained- release tablets, the other 58 cases by oral potassium chloride solution. We retested the serum potassium level two days after treatment. Results After treatment, serum potassium level elevated in all the 116 eases compared with baseline. The serum potassium level elevation magnitude in patients who took potassium chloride solution were larger than in patients who took potassium chloride sustained-release tablets, and there was statistically significant difference between the two methods [ ( 0. 492 ± 0. 242 ) mmol/L vs ( 0. 219 ± 0.131 ) mmol/L; t = 2. 543 ,P 〈 0.05 ]. Conclusions For mild hypokalemic patients, oral potassium chloride solution treatment is safe and more effective compared with oral potassium chloride sustained-release tablets.
