Contacts Between Joseph Needham and Zhang Dong-Sun and His Sons

根据档案馆所藏李约瑟与张宗炳、张宗燧的通信以及李约瑟日记、卡片等文献,梳理了上世纪40年代李约瑟与张东荪及其两个儿子张宗炳、张宗燧的交往活动,反映了战争期间李约瑟与科学文化界的联系与活动,新发现的史料也为张东荪等人的历史研究作了有益的补充。

Joseph Needham stayed in China from 1943 to 1946 and proposed to build Sino-British scientific Co-operationBureau, which played a positive role in wartime China. During the time Needham contacted with lots of cultural figures, with whomhe remained close ties even when he returned to Britain after the war. The communication between Needham and Zhang Dong-Sunand his two sons Zhang Zong-Bing and Zhang Zong-Sui reflected by the correspondence between them shows both the social lifetrajectory of Zhang Senior in the 1940s and Needham's contacts with and activities in the scientific and cultural communities during the war.Newly found historical data have made beneficial supplement to the study of Zhang Dong-sun and his sons.
