Phonological awareness is the key factor affecting children’s reading development.Few studies, however, have explored the nature and working mechanisms underlying phonological awareness. The present study elaborated on the essential features of phonological awareness by introducing the theories regarding word reading and lexical representation as the theoretical frameworks for analysis first, and then proposed that phonological awareness reflects the quality of phonological representations in nature, namely word-specific and grapheme-phoneme representations.Further, confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling were employed to test the double component model of phonological awareness and the model of phonological awareness-reading relationship, respectively. It was revealed that the priori models fit the data fairly well, thereby confirming the theoretical analysis of the essential features of phonological awareness.
