The levels of testosterone (T), estradiol (E2) and progesterone (P) in plasma and gastrin in serum were determined in 24 male patients with active duodenal ulcer (DU), 9 with active gastric ulcer (GU) and 21 male healthy subjects using radioimmunoassay. It was found that plasma T levels were markedly higher in DU patients (581.7±153.9 ng/100ml) than those in healthy subjects (462.9 ±107.8ng/100ml, P<0.01). P levels were significantly lower in DU patients (0.24± 0.11ng/ml, P<0.001) and GU patients (0.25±0.09ng/ml, P<0.01) than those in healthy subjects (0.41±0.16ng/ml). We also found that plasma E2 levels had a negative correlation with serum gastrin levels in healthy subjects (r = -0.572. P<0.01). apostive correlation in DU patients (r= 0.505. P<0.02) and without correlation in GU patients (r=0.426> P>0.05)- These results of the present study suggest that the change of sex hormones levels in plasma is one of the pathogenetic factors in peptic ulcer. Plasma E2 might be an inhibitor on the release or synthesis of gastrin in normal physiological condition, and this mechanism might be defective in patients with peptic ulcer.
