Through the summary of relevant literature of deer antler biology, we discussed the results and discoveries of antler generation and regeneration, especially the research on antlerogenic periosteum and pedicle periosteum. Removal of antlerogenic periosteum abolishes future pedicle and antler formation, whereas transplantation of the periosteum on the deer body induces ectopic pedicle and antler growth. Therefore, antlerogenic periosteum is the basis of antler histogenesis, and antler stem cells reside in the periosteum. This review further discussed the mechanism underlying antler growth and development, and provided important experimental data and references.
