Objective To analyze the effect of the mortality of diabetes mellitus on residents in Xingjiang production and construction group. Methods With tratified random cluster sampling, 14 divisions were selected, and demographic information and death information of residents in 2007 were obtained from the police departments. Then, the mortality, constituent ratio of death cause, potential years of life lost(PYLL), average years of life lost(AYLL), etc., were calculated. Results The annual average mortality rate of diabetes mellitus in the area was 9.88/10^5, and the female rate(11.98/10^5) was higher than the male’s (7.98/10^5); the rate of the urban(9.90/10^5) was higher than that of the countryside(8.57/10^5), the rate of north areas (9.92/10^5) was higher than that of the south(6.96/10^5) and the eastern(2.68/10^5), and the rate in developed areas(9.12/10^5) was higher than that in poor areas(4.86/10^5). Diabetes mellitus was harmful to middle and aged persons, especially to female. The life lost rate was 0.30%, the female’s was higher. The PYLL was 14.03 years for death patient with diabetes mellitus. Diabetes mellitus had close links with celebrovascular diseases and cardiac diseases. Conclusion The harmfulness of diabetes mellitus is greater, and has increased significantly. It is necessary to strengthen intervention works of prevention against incidence rate of diabetes mellitus.
