《空心人》继承了诗人《荒原》中对社会现实的悲观和绝望,但是,在《空心人》篇章中,艾略特则更加深入的给读者刻画了当时他眼中社会人的"空心"状态——精神、行为、情感、认知、希望的各种虚无,也呈现了当时社会人性在美的方向上的沉沦和淹没,同时也将诗人残存的一丝理想希望之光彻底的湮灭,整篇诗歌给读者的整体艺术感受无非是一种类似于末日的文明。

In The Hollow Men, Eliot continues to show his pessimistic and despairing attitude towards the social re- ality, as an inheritance of his poet, The Waste Land. But, in The Hollow Man, Eliot portrays much more in - depth to the readers the ＂ hollow＂ -mental state of the people at that time. In his eyes, people present their emptiness and hopelessness in every aspect, such as their spirit, their behavior, their emotion, their cognition as well as their hope. This is a reflection of the destruction and drowning of the social human nature in the direction. It is also a complete obliteration of Eliot＇ s last hope for the ideal society. From this poem, we can feel that it is similar to the end of civilization from the perspective of art.
