颜永京对西方心理学引入及其汉语心理学术语创制

Yan Yongjing's Contribution to the Introduction of Western Psychology into China and His Coinage of Chinese Psychological Terms

颜永京在其教育译著《肄业要览》(1882)中初步引介了西方心理学的知识与体系,并草创了一些心理学名词,但其使用并不严格,而在其心理学译著《心灵学》(上,1889)中,颜永京结合汉语的底蕴创制了一些汉语心理学术语。其创制的心理学术语与日本学者利用汉字创制的心理学术语具有内在的相互可理解性。西方心理学与中国文化早期碰撞的主要体现就是汉语心理学术语的创制。在日本心理学术语大量输入中国之前,颜永京所创制的术语是中国文化背景下理解西方心理学的重要工具。

Through translating Spencer＇s Principles of Psychology into Chinese as Yi Ye Yao Lan （《肆业要览》 ） in 1882, Yan Yongjing became the first Chinese scholar introducing western psychology into China, and in order to get this job done, he had to coin some Chinese words. But these newly created expressions were not rigorous enough, so when translating Haven＇s Mental Psychology into Chinese seven years later, he adjusted some of them and created some others, making these terms more in line with Chinese culture while faithfully conveying their original meanings. The psychological terms coined by Yan Yongjing matched very well Japa nese coinages of psychological terms that were rendered in Kanji （i. e. Chinese characters）. These new coina ges are a major showcase for the initial interaction between western psychology and Chinese culture. Before the introduction of Japanese translation of western psychology into China, the psychological terms created by Yan Yongjing provided Chinese people with an important approach to understanding western psychology in the Chi nese cultural context.
