Comedic Value of Jing and Chou Roles in Wubing's Green Peony

明末剧作家吴炳创作的著名喜剧传奇《绿牡丹》,其中作为喜剧性人物的不学无术、鄙陋奸邪的纨绔子弟柳五柳和车尚公分别由净、丑饰演,通过分析他们自身言行的喜剧性矛盾,机械的思想行为与变化了的环境的矛盾,以及情绪的突转异变,展现出本剧净丑角色的喜剧性审美意蕴及其所营造的喜剧氛围。

In the famous comedic legend Green Peony created by the late Ming Dynasty playwright Wu Bing, the incompetent, shallow and treacherous dudes Liu Wuliu and Che Shanggong are played as Jing and Chou roles separately. By analyzing the comic contradiction in their own words and deeds, the contradiction between their mechanical thinking and changing environment, as well as the sudden turn in emotions, this paper presents the comedic aesthetic implication of the Jing and Chou roles and an atmosphere of comedy created by this.
