权力话语视角下《论语》英译本的对比解读——以辜鸿铭和理雅各的译本为例

A Contrastive Study of the English Versions of The Analects by Ku Hungming and James Legge from the Perspective of Power Discourse

在权力话语理论看来,翻译不可能摆脱意识形态、知识结构等权力话语的束缚和制约。从理雅各和辜鸿铭的《论语》英译本观之,两人在英译《论语》的目的、翻译策略以及读者对译本的接受程度等方面都有权力话语打下的烙印;理氏与辜氏分别采取了原文为导向(source-language-oriented)和读者为导向(reader-oriented)的翻译原则以及相应的异化和归化的翻译策略,他们的译本在目的语中流行就足以说明其翻译策略的有效性,但由于两人的翻译策略受到不同权力话语的制约,致使其文化翻译目的在一定程度上分别得以实现或被消解。本文的研究为文本解读提供了一个新的视角,并为翻译实践提出了相关建议。

Under Foucauh＇ s theory on the power-discourse nexus, translating is an ideologically-embedded undertaking. As is ev-idenced by the English versions of The Analects by James Legge and Ku Hungming respectively, their respective translation goals,translation strategies and reader＇ s responses to the English versions are inevitably influenced by such power discourses as ideology and knowledge. Reader-oriented and source-language-oriented principles, and relevant strategies as well, were adopted in their respective translations, the effectiveness of which is evidenced by the popularity of their respective versions, whereas, power-embedded translation strategies inevitably facilitated or counteracted against their respective cultural purposes. The present research reveals the interactions between translation strategies and translation goals and the impact of power discourse on their respective versions, and offers a new ap-proaeh to translation and interpretation of texts.
