An Analysis of Factors Influencing on the Literal and Metaphorical Meaning of Words from English and Chinese

语言是社会的产物,文化的载体。构成语言基本单位的词汇在社会与文化的发展过程中,有很多因素会对其产生影响,形成形式上的语义和隐性的语义。通过分析英语和汉语不同语言文化中词汇意义在文化、社会、价值观念和思维模式方面的差异,可以更好地了解这些影响因素的作用,从而在语言交际过程中,提高敏感性和反应能力。

Language is not only the product of society but also the carrier of culture. As the basic unit of language , vocabulary which is influenced by many elements developed gradually its literal meaning and meta- phorical meaning during the development of society and culture. This article analyzes the differences about the meaning of vocabulary from Chinese and English in cultural background, society, values and thinking patterns. It aims to develop learner＇ s sensitiveness to cultural differences and improve their abilities in intercultural communication.
