The Stage and Classification of Liu Zongyuan's Letters of Correspondence

柳宗元三十五篇私人书信有三十一篇写在贬谪后,二十九篇写于永州。写给上级及前辈的主要有七篇,"仰视者,其言恭";十四篇写给朋友同辈,"平视者,其言直";十四篇写给晚辈后生,"俯视者,其言慈"。按题材内容分,有三大类:叙述遭遇,谈艺论文,其他(包括论师道、历史、税收政理、天人关系、做人、长生之道、做学问、墓中石及石钟乳等)。

Liu Zongyuan has 35 private letters, of which 31 letters are written after being banished, 29 letters in Yongzhou. Among these 35 letters, there are 7 letters written to the authorities and predecessors, very respectfully ; 14 letters, to the friends and peers, very frankly; 14 letters, to the younger generations, very kindly. According to the subject, they can be classified as the following three categories： recounting tortures, discussing treatises, and other subjects.
