Contributions to the Study of English Literary History by the Older Generation of Chinese Scholars in the Reform Era

20世纪80年代初,陈嘉和范存忠的两部英文版《英国文学史》代表了当时该领域研究的最高水平。1996年出版了王佐良所著《英国文学史》,这是中国学者用中文撰写的第一部英国文学通史。2006年,王佐良与周珏良主编、33位学者参与编写的五卷本《英国文学史》全部出齐。这部史著具有中国式的观点与风格。杨周翰撰写的《17世纪英国文学》则是一部独具特色的断代史著作。本文将对上述前辈学者的学术贡献分别加以评述。

This article surveys the great contributions to the study of English literary history made by the older generation of Chinese scholars like Chen Jia, Fan Cunzhong, Wang Zuoliang and Yang Zhouhan. In the early 1980s, Chen Jia published a four-volume history of English literature, while Fan Cunzhong published his History of English Literature： A Brief Outline, both written in English and representing the highest standard at the time. Wang Zuoliang＇ s History of English Literature published in 1996 in Chinese was the first of its kind. In 2006, the five-volume History of English Literature with Wang Zuoliang and Zhou Jueliang as general editors was finally completed. It broke through the old conventions in the study of English literary history and marked as a history of English literature from the Chinese perspective and in the Chinese style. Yang Zhouhan＇ s 17th-Century English Literature, though not titled as ＂history＂, was in fact a particularly well-written literary history of that period.
