Norman Mailer believes that post-war America faces the threat of a totalitarian government, but different from Hitler' s Third Reich or Stalin' s Soviet Union. American totalitarianism will emerge in the guise of "Conservative Liberalism", an idea he proposes in the closing section of The Naked and the Dead. To counterattack it, Mailer comes up with "The White Negro", an essay brimming with his existential and radical idealism. By digging into the writing motivation behind and the philosophical basis of "The White Negro" and analyzing the connotations of "Conservative Liberalism", this essay tries to prove that Mailer, no doubt a radical idealist, is in effect a conservative liberal himself.
