The Mark on the Wall is a typical work of stream of consciousness. Haphazard and separate images are pieced together, which poses much difficulty in interpretation of the work. However, if ana- lyzed from the perspective of ＂focalization,＂ the short piece is a quintessence of framework narrative. The ＂narrating self＂ produces the frame narrative into which narratives generated by the ＂ experiencing self＂ are embedded.
