On language Utilization and Identity Acknowledgement in Cross-Cultural Communication: Based on Analysis of Cultural Differences

在跨文化交际中,如何运用得体、适当的语言,建立起有效的身份认同,是关系到交际效果的重要问题。身份的建构有多种途径,语言是其中的一种。通过使用特定风格的语言,说者可以在听者面前建立起某种身份。反之,身份意识也会影响说者的语言选择。交际者的语言运用会受到文化差异的影响,因此应根据对方的文化背景来选择得体语言,尤其是了解异质文化的禁忌,以免误解。文化差异还会影响跨文化交际中的身份认同,这可以从文化身份和身份理解两个层面来认识。

In the situation of cross-cultural communication, how to use proper language expressions to have acknowledge- ment from others is an important issue which is related to communicative effect. A certain language expression can build up a specific identity, and identity awareness can influence speakers＇ language choice, too. Cultural differences can influence communicators＇ language utilization, so communicators should choose appropriate language expressions according to the cultural background of the opposite communicative party, avoiding taboos of the opposite side. In addition, cultural differ- ences can influence identity acknowledgement in cross-cultural communication, which can be analysed from cultural identi- fication and identity understanding.
