The first section of this article clarifies the original meaning of 'poetry' and 'philosophy' within the ancient Greek context,and indicates the cultural background of Platonic criticism of poetry.In the next two sections,as the main body,it elucidates how Plato carries out his criticism of poetry from the perspectives of paideia and truth respectively,and shows the tension between these two perspectives.The final section gives a hint of how to evaluate the status of both poetry and philosophy in the time of ours.
