The sex hormone estrogen is a hormonal multi-tasker, contributing to roles as diverse as the differentiation and function of the reproductive tract, memory storage, bone growth and nerve system. Estrogens exert many of their be- havioral effects by binding to nuclear estrogen receptor Erα and Erβ. Recent studies involving ER knockout mice and se- lective ER agonists suggest that ER α playsan important role in hippocampal function. Little is known about whether the expression of Erα is related to aging and gender. In this paper, the expression of Erα was examined in mice hippocam- pus between age, sex and OVX difference. The data suggest that the expression of Erα is relatedto aging and gender and imply that the expression of Erα is regulated by peripheral estrogen. These results provide a reference for further study that Erα involves gene expression regulation of hippocampus and clinical therapy of related diseases.
