Of the 8 sub-categories under Engagement in Appraisal Theory,Acknowledgement is a special one.Typically,it has an indispensible role in organizing local and holistic events of story.That is,they are usually represented by practical language elements（verbal entities in particular,but not only that）;they have their due part in story constitution.The present paper starts from the foregrounding perspective,carries out a detailed analysis of the acknowledgement elements in the narrative text The Bridges of Madison County,and reveals an entire new aspect of story organization,an approach that may be applicable to both classical literary texts and modern and post-modern fictions.
