创造“文化新天地”:清末民初广东基督教徒对上海城市文化的冲击和改造

To Create a New World of Culture: The Impact and Reform of Shanghai Urban Culture of Christians of Guangdong in Late Qing Dynasty

本文透过清末民初在上海的广东人基督教群体,以察看及分析其中两组人对上海城市文化所作的贡献。其一是创办和经营百货公司的基督徒,其二是以新技术印刷图书画报的文化人和出版商人,他们许多也有基督教的背景。这群广东人在沪的发展和际遇,比较起早期由粤来沪的商人和买办,无论其职业、心态以及对城市经济的冲击和对文化产生的作用,都有着显著的差别。

This paper studies and analyzes the contributions to Shanghai urban culture done by two groups of Christians from Guangdong. The first group was Christians who set up and ran department stores; the second was intellectuals and businessmen who were engaged in printing books and illustrated magazines or newspapers with new technology. Their developments and circumstances in Shanghai differed distinctly from those businessmen and compradors who earlier came from Guangdong to Shanghai.
