By using a sentence preference test and a sentence interpretation test, this paper tested some Chinese learners of English and English native speakers on the comprehension of past tense telic verbs and past progressive telic verbs. The results showed that,on the acceptability of past tense and past progressive telic verbs, the high-proficiency learners of English performed as well as the native speakers, while the low-proficiency learners differed significantly from the natives. The majority of both the learners and the natives interpreted past tense telic verbs as referring to the completion of an event, and only a few of them regarded past progressive telic verbs as representing the completion of an event.Meanwhile,in holding that past tense telic verbs represent the completion of an event,a lower percentage was observed with the low-proficiency learners than with the natives.
