The Guiding Significance of Conceptual Metaphor Theory to College English Teaching from the Cognitive Perspective

Metaphor is not only a rhetorical device but also a cognitive means and an important cognitive tool. Based on the analysis of conceptual metaphor theory,the article explores the application of conceptual metaphor in College English teaching. Lexical meaning expansion, syntactic structural forming, and discourse building are related to metaphorical cognitive mode. The application of the theory of cognitive metaphor improves the understanding of language, amuses learners＇ interest and develops the thinking in the target lan- gnage.
