Letters,Memory,and Space: A Rereading of Herzog

本文借用叙事空间理论的观念,从地志空间、社会空间和文本空间三个方面结合记忆问题,对索尔·贝娄的代表作《赫索格》的叙事方式、特点以及叙事方式在人物塑造和主题表达方面的作用进行了剖析。在由大量书信和记忆并置构成的文本空间中,贝娄展现了小说主人公在地志空间中的旅程,他在社会空间中的成长和体验,刻画了一位西方现代知识分子的自我审视、反思美国社会和西方文明的心路历程,从而深刻地反映了当代美国的社会问题和精神危机。

By using the spatial theory of narratology,this paper analyzes the narrative patterns,features,and their function in characterization and expression of themes in Saul Bellow's Herzog from the topographical,social spatial,and textual spatial angles.Within the textual space formed by letters and memory,Bellow shows us the protagonist's travel in topographical space,and his growth and experience in social space.Bellow deeply reflects on the social problems and spiritual crisis in contemporary America by depicting a modern Western intellectual's self-scrutiny and his introspection of American society and Western civilization.
