A.S.Byatt's Babel Tower describes, from the perspective of language, the complicated historical scene of Britain in the mid-1960s.With abundant literary imagination,it 'represents' historically the shifting relation between language and reality, and its effect upon society and individual existence. This paper, based on its central biblical myth of Babel Tower, attempts to interpret how the novel reconstructs, through the prevailing language crisis at that time, the chaotic existence of British society and individual life in 'the sixties.'
