Since the premiere of Harold Pinter's The Homecoming,this play has always attracted critics' attention.The motives of the characters in the play are uncertain and difficult to understand.This paper examines the complexity of the characters in the play and concludes that Max's family members are just familiar strangers living together for lack of effective communication.Some critics regard the titular 'homecoming' as Ruth's 'coming home.' I disagree with this view and argue that the theme of the play is to reflect the homeless state of modern people.
