Various studies focusing on reading and listening skills have been conducted in different theoretical frameworks, with school children or college students as participants. However, the effect of what Perfett calls 'lexical quality' on receptive skills seems to have received scanty attention. The present study, through correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis and with Chinese English-major college students as participants, explores the possible impact of phonological, orthographic, and semantic processing of lexes on L2 learners' reading and listening skills. It finds that as L2 learners' language proficiency gradually develops a high-level lexical component skill like semantic processing plays an increasingly more important role in affecting the participants' reading and listening skills, whereas the effect of a low-level skill like phonological processing weakens in the process. In addition, phonological processing exerts a greater influence on listening skill than on reading skill.
