An Analysis of the Image of Chinese Women in Hollywood Films from a Historical Perspective

纵观美国电影史,在其展现华人形象的早期影片中,华人尤其是华人妇女形象在很大程度上是一种歪曲的再现。这虽然有中国移民自身的原因,但更重要的是美国联邦政府颁布的一系列针对华人移民的限制性移民政策,人为导致了美国主流社会缺乏对华人尤其是华人妇女的接触和了解。在极为有限的渠道中他们所接触到的是从事娼妓业的中国妓女。久而久之,这种直观而有限的印象就成为好莱坞电影中华人妇女形象的重要源泉和现实依据。

In quite a number of Hollywood films, the distorted image of Chinese women was presented. The Chinese immigrants in the United States were partly responsible for that, but largely it was the consequence of the American immigration policy to China, which made it almost impossible for the American mainstream society to have contact with the Chinese immigrants, and Chinese women in particular. Thus, the few Chinese prostitutes to whom it had access had been regarded as the whole of Chinese women, which accounts for the distorted image of Chinese women in the Hollywood films.
