A Contrastive Study on Chinese “Lao” and English “Old”

"老"和"old"有很多相似之处,它们经常被互译。然而,在它们比较相似的背后却有更多的不同之处。本文将从它们的概念意义、语用效果;语法特征、句法功能;以及由它们组成的成语、习语来对比这两个词的异同。

There are many similarities between Chinese ＂lao＂ and English ＂lao＂, and they are usually translated for each other. However, there are more differences behind their similarities. This paper con- trasts the similarities and differences of these two words from their conceptual meaning, pragmatic effect; grammatical features, syntactic function; and the idioms which are formed by them.
