Language commuication is inevitably accompanied by understanding difficulties. Previous relevant studies reveal that language learners tend to use negotiation for meaning to solve understanding difficulties. The present paper holds that, from a social-cultural and cognitive perspective, negotiation for meaning can not guarantee all the understanding difficulties in language communication are solved as is traditionally claimed. Sometimes it will lead to unsuccessful language communication and even communicative misunderstandings. The present authors argue that the importance of negotiation for meaning in overcoming understanding difficulties in language communications is limited.
