This paper gave an introduction to the coal tar hydrogenation process and also the design requirement of the automatic control system. The HydroCOM control programs and the Back-flow regulation control programs were expati- ated and compared. The each stage back-flow and regulation/control program is normally adopted for engineering designs, and the issues calling for attention in site practice were summarized.
