Freezing Point is the first well-known book of Ayako Miura, a female Japanese Christian writer. In the light of Freud's Psychoanalysis and Takeo Doi's anatomy of Dependence, we have analyzed the sense of sin in one of the leading characters, Keizou Tsujiguchi. Miura's depiction of Keizou Tsujiguchi's sense of sin is multi-layered and gradual. Takeo Doi's "Dependence" accounts for Tsujiguchi's initial unawareness of sin, while "collective consciousness" leads to his gradual reali- zation. However, this realization is incomplete and context-dependent. It is apparently tinged with Japan's social and cultural characteristics.
