On the Matchmakers and the Scenes of Making a Match in Sanyan and Liangpai

媒人是"三言""二拍"中的重要角色,他们身份各异,既有职业媒婆,也有众多其他身份者。媒人形象大都不够鲜明丰满,但在叙事方面又发挥了重要作用,因而将媒人看做小说叙事中的"功能性"人物更为确切。"三言""二拍"中有众多不同类型的说媒场景,说媒场景对小说人物形象的塑造、市井气息的渲染和故事情节的发展发挥了重要的作用。

From various social status, the matchmakers play an important role in the novels of Sanyan and Liangpai. Some are professional matchmakers while the others arc not. Even though their created images are not vivid, they play an important role in the narration. Therefore, it is more proper to regard them as the functional rols in the process of narrating. In these novels, there are different types of matchmaking scenes, which are helpful to the creation of characters＇ images, the creation of town atmosphere, and the development of the story.
